Christmas and anytime around the Holidays is the perfect excuse to get lots of crafting done. It’s my favorite part of the year and there are so many reasons to make and craft so many items for gifting, decoration, and even wearing! If you’ve ever been to a holiday party, then you know how fun it is to dress up your outfit with special festive pieces that you would not normally wear. I love to use glitter, shiny and otherwise outlandish material to wear and decorate around the holiday season. Recently I’ve been invited to my first Holiday party of the year, and although I’m opting out of buying a new dress, I thought I’d make some festive earrings to go along with the Christmas theme.

Fair warning, the faux leather glitter material is a pain to cut through. But don’t worry, I did all the hard work and tested the different settings for you. So if you have a Cricut and you want to make these snowflake earrings for yourself, if you follow these instructions, they will turn out perfectly! Overall this project is fairly simple, the only issue was figuring out what setting works the best with the glitter material.

Materials

For the earring material, I wanted something sparkly, so I purchased a large pack of faux leather glitter fabric on Amazon. I bought 25 sheets for around $15.00. The pack came in a variety of colors, so I figured I would just keep the rest and use them throughout the year.

The other materials you will need are two jump rings, which are small circular pieces of metal that will attach your earring material to your earring hook, as well as your earring hook.

You will also need a pair of small pliers to attach the jump ring to the earring and close the clasp. If you have two small pliers, use two. It’s much easier to hold both sides of the jump ring with pliers when closing it than with your fingers. But if you don’t have two pairs of pliers I wouldn’t worry about it.

Instructions

The first thing you are going to do is download the FREE Snowflake SVG. This SVG is specifically designed to be cut out easily with your Cricut. If you do use another snowflake design, try testing it on your Cricut first. I found that the more complicated snowflake designs don’t cut as well on your Cricut machine.

Once you have downloaded the file and saved it to your computer, open up your Cricut Design Space.

After you have your Cricut Design Space opened, you are going to want to upload your SVG. Upload your SVG as a cut file only, you do not need the print and cut option for this project. You can also choose the SVG as a simple design.

Make sure to size your earring to how large you want them to be. I size my earrings usually around two inches but make them larger or smaller depending on how you would wear them.

After you have your earrings sized accordingly, choose your sheet of faux glitter. For the snowflake, I chose silver glitter, but you can choose whatever color matches your personal style. You can also choose something based on the color of the outfit you are going to wear with your earrings.

Make sure your faux leather is secured really well to your cutting mat, the material will tend to move around if you’re not careful. If your mat has lost some of its adhesive, use the painter’s tape or blue tape method and tape down the material to your mat around all four corners. This is the best method I’ve come across to keep your material secured to your Cricut cutting mat.

Set your dial on your Cricut to the dot ‘in between’ Bonded Fabric and Poster Board. Trust me, this is the best method. DO NOT adjust the pressure of your blade, keep it on default. Any extra pressure will cause your blade to go over the material several times, causing it to bunch up and ruin the cut. DO NOT use the custom settings with this fabric. I tried cutting various times with the Metallic Faux setting and other faux leather settings, and they all caused the fabric to be over-cut and bunched up. Setting your Cricut to the dial inbetween the Bonded Fabric and Poster Board is the best method I found for cutting glitter faux leather.

Once you have cut out your snowflakes, carefully pull them up from the fabric, making sure not to tear any of the small snowflake ‘arms’. If any of your material is still uncut, carefully use scissors to cut out the remaining part of the attached fabric. You can also use a craft blade to cut the remaining material.

Putting your earring together

Use your pliers to open up the ends of your jump ring. Slip on the earring material and the earring hook. Close the clasp carefully, securing the two ends tightly.

Tips and Tricks

If the hole in your earring snowflake is too small use a sewing needle to expand the hole with your hand.

Create gifts for friends and families for the holidays by making snowflake earrings! Customize them to everyone’s favorite color.

Experiment with different materials like paperboard, shiny leather, or even chipboard.

If you’re going to spend a lot of time making earrings invest in some earring-making tools, like needle nose pliers and small jump rings.

If you want to get creative with your Christmas packaging you can tie the earrings to the tip of your gift with a ribbon for a cute wrapping idea.

Cut out two different complimenting colors of snowflakes and size one smaller than the other for a double snowflake, 3D look.

Try cutting out different holiday shapes like evergreen trees, Santa hats, and more for fun!
