Easter is right around the corner, so I thought this would be the perfect time to share my very beginner-friendly tutorial of these Easter Cupcake Toppers using my Cricut Joy machine.

I have to say I’m one of those people that love to make everything from scratch. I’ve enjoyed cooking, baking and even enjoyed creating other crafty projects around our home, even my daughters are huge fans of DIYs on Pinterest, so it made complete sense to get the Cricut Joy last summer.

If you’re not familiar with the Cricut Joy, it’s your new DIY best friend! It can write, draw, doodle, and cut to your little creative mind’s bliss. It uses Cricut design space just like their other tools, but the Cricut Joy is smaller and much easier to take with you around the house for smaller projects and more convenience.

Since we got our Cricut Joy, we’ve created greeting cards, stickers, and banners for the girl’s bedrooms, but I hadn’t tried cake/cupcake toppers yet. At first, when I was trying to decide what post to write for Creative Fabrica, I knew right away it would have to be simple and helpful for readers because I personally spend a bunch on cake toppers with everyone’s birthday. This was going to be a learning experience for me too. On my own lifestyle blog, Life with Kami, I rarely write tutorials, so here we go. 🙂

This will have to go down as one of the easiest Cricut Joy tutorials ever.

Materials you will need for this project:

  • Cricut Joy
  • Card Stock
  • Tape Measure
  • Candy Sticks or Toothpicks
  • Glue Gun
  • Easter Egg Cut Files – Creative Fabrica
  • Cricut Design Space App

Instructions:

I found my cupcake toppers from Creative Fabrica; I couldn’t decide which ones to choose, so I got a couple of different designs. The options were endless.

  1. Select the files from Creative Fabrica and then download/save them to your computer or phone.
  2. Open your Design Space app and start a new project.
  3. Upload the cake topper files, you can use any image format, but I choose png for this project.
  4. Once uploaded, I selected my ‘image type’; this depends on how many details your image has, like lots of cuts or colors, etc. I chose to go with the middle option, MODERATELY COMPLEX, because it’s my first time making these toppers, and I didn’t want to miss any details.
  5. The Select & Erase screen will then come up, and I look over the image to make sure everything looks good and then click continue.
  6. The next page that comes up will give you the option of Cut Image, or Print Then Cut Image. We are only going to Cut the image this time. Select Cut Image, then Upload.
  7. You’ll then see the image in your ‘Recent Uploads’ area, select it again, and then click on insert images.
  8. Here is where you want to use your tape measure and measure the size you will need on your cupcakes. I did w2.5 & h3.3 at the top of the screen, and you’ll see the size of the topper adjust automatically.
  9. Click Make It
  10. On the next screen, select if you’re using a Mat for this project, which was the tricky part for me. I couldn’t get my card stock to cut on the Mat, but you can’t select card stock without using the Mat. Go ahead and select On Mat here even though you won’t be using one. Then continue to the next page.
  11. Your Cricut Joy should automatically connect via Bluetooth and then select your material here and click GO once you’ve loaded your card stock into the Cricut Joy.
  12. After you unload your cut files, you can use a glue gun to stick the candy sticks to your Easter eggs.

Here are some tips for creating the perfect toppers

  • It starts with the perfect design file. If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly project here, you don’t want to have many details on the image. (think smaller details, circles, cuts, etc.) It will be time-consuming, and there will be more to weed once the cut is complete. Creative Fabrica has thousands of files, so take your time and save as you’re going through them. Feel free to mix and match designs like I did to create a fun look.
  • Think of the theme you’re trying to achieve. Will it be kid-friendly? Are you looking for bright colors, pastels? Try to match up your decor like the cupcake cups, table decor, confetti, and other elements on your display table.
  • Get heavy cardstock for any cake or cupcake topper; you don’t want your finished cut to be bending or folding over after the cut. I learned this the hard way when I tried making the girl’s banners for their bedrooms.
  • You can use toothpicks if you can’t find candy sticks for the part that goes into the cupcake. Try stores like Michael’s, Joann’s Fabric, or even Wilton’s online for baking tools and more baking-related decor items.
  • If you want to take these cupcake toppers to the next level, you can create two or three cut files and layer them for a 3D design. Use a glue gun to keep them together.
  • You can even do different texture cardstock for that over-the-top look. Think glitter! Now we’re going to look like professional cake decorators, so you have been warned 😉

There you have it. If your cupcake toppers didn’t come out perfectly, that’s ok, I had a few that tore, but I think this is one where practice makes a perfect kind of undertaking.

I felt so much better after making my first cupcake topper with my Cricut Joy. I plan on doing a cake topper for my son’s birthday coming up, and I want to try using other cutting materials as well, or I’ll try a 3D design for him.
